Gabi's first trip to the Zoo

Our ward's mom's group went to the Zoo today! It was Gabi's first time to see all the animals. She seemed to have a good time and was really talkative.

Gabi and the Grinch

It was a tradition of Jack's family to take a picture with Santa. We never had that tradition so we compromised by getting Gabi a pic with the Grinch!

My life as a mom...

So it has been a little over a week since I have been a full time mom. Intersting I must say. It feels like I have just called in sick for a week, and that I will be going back to work any day now. (crazy I know..)

Gabi has become very attached, I think she feels I am going to leave her for a few hours like I used to do so I could go to work. Hopefully she will settle down. The other day I found that Tellytubbies were on TV. Gabi was fussy and so I put her in her swing to watch. She loved it. She almost watched the entire show. I was pretty shocked. Which brings me to this question. How much TV is too much TV for a kid?

In our house it seems like the TV is on ALL THE TIME. Especially when we are home. It is a constant background noise. I don't like that and would like it on only when we have shows that we want to watch. I would rather have music playing or a book on tape. Jack says that he needs to have the TV on when he gets home to relax and he likes to watch right before he goes to sleep. (That is a post for another day though)

What are your views on TV and kids or just TV in general?

My last day at work...

Today was my last day at work. I would have worked there 2 year come this Jan. It was a wonderful place to work and I loved all the people I was able to get to know and interact with. Here are a couple pics of some good times, borrowed from people's cameras and some of my own...

Thanksgiving

This year was our year to spend with Jack's family. We bought our tickets to fly back in July or something...a long time ago! It was a stretch to buy them but I am SO happy we did! An hour and a half beats driving 10 + hours any day!

Gabi's first plane ride!

She was a great little traveler.
This was a really cool shot...too bad my camera couldn't capture its splendor...

Announcing...teeth...

Gabi has two teeth that somehow appeared overnight at about 5 months...seriously that is what it seemed like....no teething symptoms whatsoever. We affectionally call them her "teethers" or "toothies." She is now trying to bite everything...and we try not to let her. I don't want to be the mom who gets the call from the preschool...

"Ma'am, you need to come and pick up your child.

Why is she sick?

No, she bit a child...and won't let go."

Ok...all joking aside. I really don't want her to think biting is an okay thing.

If Gabi is anything like her mom we are in trouble...I got thrown out of the preschool sand box for a day for throwing sand..I know, some of you are shocked.

Neener neener neener...

So my family is pretty competitive...extended family included. With my brother Nick involved, EVERYTHING becomes a competition. I, however, am not too competitive...I guess I should be, since I am a "first born" or so "they" say. Anyway, there is this toy that Gabi has with a little ball that lights up when the toy is moved around. Jack got the idea that we should try to see who can get the little ball to stay in the middle. Mom did it, Dad and cousin Daniel did it too. However on 11/11/2007 about 5 min before we left the house to go scout out our Christmas tree I did it in less than 5 seconds. AND I walked it across the room to sit on the shelf where it stays today (and Gabi is no longer allowed to touch it).

So Neener neener neener.

O Christmas tree....

Back in Oct. Jack put us in for a Christmas tree tag. If we drew we would be able to cut down our own christmas tree. We ended up drawing a tag. Hurray!

Or so we thought...

We took advantage of Veteran's Day and went "scouting" for Christmas trees. Jack "knew" exactly where we would be going. 50 miles of bad dirt road later....we probably shouldn't have taken our little sedan up and down those roads....We made it back alive though, and I got SO carsick. Gabi slept the whole way through...the stinker!

This is where we figured out that we were not able to take the "recommended" route. It had already been pretty hairy so far. Since this route was closed we had no choice but to head on and it got MUCH worse!

We saw seven turkeys...we could have snapped a great shot of them all in the dirt road, just milling around...but we forgot to get out the camera until they had started to casually walk up the embankment.

We've come so far....this is where we finally hit pavement again. The road closed sign was at the top of the mountains in the background.

First foods....

These pics were taken on 11/11/2007. Since these pics Gabi greedly eats heaping spoonfuls and is now eating about twice a day. She also will eat it cold and her bottles straight out of the fridge full of cold goats milk...I guess we don't have a picky baby :)
Here I am enjoying my rice cereal!
I think I may have eaten too much....ughhhh

Beginning to crawl...

These pics and the video below were taken on 11/05/2007...
What are you looking at mom?

Whee! I'm flying!

7 tidbits of information you never wanted to know about me…

I am not at my computer with pics right now so I will indulge you people, who have been waiting, so patiently I might add…cough Audrey cough...j/k

So I have been tagged by my friend Audrey (I know it was a while ago!!) to provide little known info about myself…I have been mulling over this for literally weeks….I feel that I am pretty much an open book and quite un-interesting too…but here it goes!

Oh and I have to tag 7 people…so look for your name at the end!

1. I was born at 25 ½ weeks weighing 1lb 14oz. I was given a 1/100 chance of living but apparently I am a fighter…I have to remind myself of that sometimes. I spent 87 days in the hospital and came home. Sorry Mom and Dad that I put you through that much stress as a first born! I now understand a little bit about what you might have been feeling!

2. I play/played 6 instruments. They are in order Violin, Flute, Oboe, English Horn, Voice, and Piano. The last two are debatable, since I am still working on the piano ( a LOT) and I don’t really sing much but have in the past. The Oboe and the English Horn I played in H.S. and LOVED them. Sadly, when I graduated H.S. I had to stop playing because we didn’t own the instruments. I HATE to play in public by myself (something that I am trying to get over) but I will gladly play in a duet, trio, quartet, etc.

3. I LOVE to cook. I don’t care what it is, I love to cook it! Although, I hate to clean up after myself (much to my husbands dismay). I would LOVE my own cooking show…although I am not very original with my recipes, and I don’t think I am creative enough, still it would be fun. I have toyed with the idea of going to cooking school someday…

4. I love organization…if you are reading this and have actually seen my house or grown up with me you will probably need to be resuscitated. Seriously I do! I like a place for everything and everything in its place…or at least I am trying to get there!

5. I am a big time procrastinator….I always leave things till the very very VERY last min. I guess I got it from my Grandma…She had a saying “ If it wasn’t for the last minute, NOTHING would get done.” Yeah, that’s kind of my life…I am working on changing it!

6. I love to play games…board games, card games, video games…the list goes on and on…let’s just say I like to have fun…

7. I have always wanted to have a really NICE dinner party for my friends…you know the kind, it’s always around the holidays, you have to decide if you will go to visit family or go to my party and you decide my party because the food is always TO DIE FOR and the place is decorated fabulously LOL…ahhh someday…

The people I tag are…Liz, Lolly, Beth D., Whitney D., Jen, Marielle, and Chantal

Hi Momma!
So, what is Halloween?

I am sick...

Well I'm sick. That achy all over, stomach queasy, feel like you have been hit by a truck sick. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal I would just sleep it off...however, I have come to realize being sick takes on a new meaning when you have kids. One being that I am here at work because I have been taking too many sick days for Gabi's many many Dr. appointments! Poor little Gabi just wants to play and for me to love her...:(

SO far Gabi is not sick and I hope to keep it that way. It is hard though to remember not to kiss her!!!!

This weekend was NOT the time to get sick we have a lot going on! Let's hope I feel better tomorrow! :)

Bad things come in threes, don't they?

Last weekend my MIL was in town to visit Gabi. Sunday we were all getting ready for church when out of my hands slipped a 2lb tub of gel that I was using and...BAM! Right on my big toe. Well, since I had gel in my hands I put that in my hair and then proceeded to take care of my now bleeding toe. Here we are now a week later and so far (crosses fingers) the toenail is still attached, it's black and blue, but still attached! Hurray! (Pray for my toenail that it grows back, if it does fall off!) I did go to urgent care the next day because it was hurting more and MIL thought it might be broken. I have never smashed nor broken a body part so I thought I would check it out. No breaks just badly bruised. :)

And for the inquiring minds...here is a picture of the toe the day it got smashed.

Today I was busy making dinner in the morning...why you ask? Because I wouldn't be around to make dinner for Jack this evening. I had planned a lovely appointment to get my haircut by Brooke, Audrey's stylist! Hurray! Anyway, we all know that a majority of men would starve if we didn't feed them...SO I went along making dinner. I was all done and turned off all the burners, or so I thought. ( I had about 3 of the 4 burners on, as I was also making myself breakfast. Perhaps a little too much multi-tasking?)

I took Gabi into our bedroom and put her in the playpen while I showered. As I am showering I get a thought to check on the baby. So I quickly step out of the shower and look over at her playing happily. I go back to showering and then I smell something funny. Leaving the shower running I again step out only to see Gabi still playing happily, but now there is a slight haze in the air in our bedroom. I leave the room and close the bedroom door.

As I look down the hallway I see the living room and kitchen filled with thick gray smoke. There was still visibility but it wasn't too great. Oh crap, I thought. As I go towards the kitchen I see the problem. Apparently one of the burners was still on low and an oven mitt was near enough to it to catch fire and smolder. There were no flames but LOTS and LOTS of smoke. I threw the oven mitt in the backyard on the concrete and ran back to check on Gabi. She had now begun to fuss a bit and I talked to her a bit and then left her again in the bedroom while I opened all the doors and windows to try to get the smoke out. I had to throw some clothes on in the process because I thought I might need to take Gabi to the Dr for possible smoke inhalation. She seemed to be fine and was acting well but I wanted to be sure. I was already getting watery eyes and a bit of a cough from breathing in the smoke. Unfortunately, all the fire training I received in elementary school went out the window and I did not get low to the ground.

The oven mitt I threw outside was STILL smoldering and so I got the hose to drown it. I felt I had to get Gabi out of the house SO I wet a rag and tried to put it over her face as we left the house so she wouldn't breath too much of the smoke that was still in the air near the front door. Once we got outside and had some fresh air she seemed to do better. Luckily, my mom was able to come over and watch the house while I took Gabi to a pediatric urgent care so they could check her oxygen levels. She was fine and got a little bit of oxygen to help push the carbon monoxide that may have been in there out of her little body.

As I type, the house is still airing out. I put some sweet smelling oil on cotton balls and put them in all the vents of our house, and that seems to be getting rid of the smell. Gabi's car seat was in the living room and still smells like smoke. I have put it outside to air out.

It turns out that this house does not have any working smoke detectors, or a fire extinguisher. If it had, this may not have gotten so far out of hand. I guess we need to go shopping.

So that's two.....let's hope there isn't anything else around the corner for me. LOL :)

The winner is...

There has been much debate on who Gabi looks like. (Thank you to those who said she looks like me!) Well scientists have come to the following conclusion...

Gabi rolls over...

Gabi has been rolling over now consistently for about a week. We finally figured out how to take a lesser quality video of her so we can post it on the blog! Enjoy!

Don't buy stuff you can't afford...

Our stake has come out with a series of "newly married" firesides. (That is what they call them but all aged marrieds are invited) We went to one last night for financial planning. It was entitled "Where does all the money go?" The husband/wife team (the Blackwells) that taught it are in our stake. He is a financial planner and goes all over the country talking about finances. They were in their late 20's or early 30's....married 8 years have two little girls.

She spoke first and talked about little routines they have in their home. She noted that she didn't start doing these things when they had money. She started it when the bank account said zero.

1. Love your bills and payouts.

When the mail comes in she says you should be excited and say things like "I have been waiting for this one!" "We are grateful for things like the August SRP bill...Thank you that we are able to pay this and cool our home." She mentioned recording everything...save your receipts and track where the $$ is going.

2. Eliminate unhealthy money phrases.

Do not use language like "That's too expensive" or "We can't afford that" She said that her kids had never heard these words. (I wanted to know what she DOES tell her kids then...lol.) This was basically on the idea of “Whether you think you can or can’t either way you are right.” - Henry Ford 1863-1947

3. Know and understand where unnecessary spending comes from. Are you competing? Is it for self-fulfillment?

She admits that she has a hard time with spending still. Even though she came from a family whose parent's would save all year to take the kids on a vacation for the summer, and they paid cash. She said "anyone who knows me knows that I like nice things. But, I have realized that things won't always match. In fact, our TV is on a card table right now until we have saved enough to get what we want."

Bro. Blackwell started off his portion with a HILARIOUS video clip from SNL.

Here is the link to it on youtube...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxFx0NzSjWw

He brought up the idea of a cash management system. He counsels all kinds of people from all walks of life. He said you would be surprised at how many people are living paycheck to paycheck. There are surgeons who live surgery to surgery and if you took out their next 3 or 4 surgeries they would be filing for bankruptcy. He sees the same thing with pro athletes. Just because you have money doesn't mean you know how to manage it.

He talked about how it is not important to just know the system but to LIVE the system. He applied it to the gospel. You can know of the gospel and then there is living the gospel. They are two very different things.

The cash management system is:(these are net percentages)

10% Tithing/Charity- learn to give

10% to YOU= emergency fund. NOT a trip to Disneyland, new couch, etc. This must be on automatic draft. Out of sight out of mind. He said a lot of people think of their credit card as being their emergency fund. This won't work because it just keeps perpetuating a vicious cycle of debt to the cc.

10% Your future -401K, mutual funds, IRA (he suggested a ROTH). Again these must be on automatic draft.

This leaves you with 70% of your NET income to live within your means. You pay off your debt and save for things with this money. He said that when people come to him and ask things like "can I afford this house?" He runs this plan with him and if the mortgage doesn't fall in the 70% he tells them NO. That really make me think and reconsider how we will look at buying a home.

He used a lot of quotes from Thomas S. Monson's talk "Leadership-a Challenge Today"-Jan 26, 2006

"An educated man is not one who has trained his mind to retain a few dates in history. He is one who can accomplish things. Unless a man has learned to think, he is not an educated man, regardless of how many college degrees he has after his name." -Henry Ford

In that same talk Pres. Monson said "We cannot restrict our thinking to today's problems alone. We have the obligation to plan for tomorrow's opportunities. We are limited only by our thoughts and personal determination to convert these thoughts to realities."

About paying off debt Blackwell suggested using debt isolation to pay off the smallest balance first, then you apply what you were paying on that towards the next smallest balance until they are all paid off; regardless of interest rates on the other debts.

He ended with this, also from Pres. Monson's talk:

Formula for successful leadership and a noble life:
First, think big.
Second, prepare well.
Third, work hard.
Fourth, live right.

In all it was a great fireside. We have also signed up for the stake Strengthening Marriage Sessions. It is a new program by LDS Family Services to assist in strengthening our families. Sessions are limited to ten couples and we have to commit to attend all six sessions. They start 10/11 and end 11/15. We will let you know what we have learned!

There has been a death in the family...

I am sad to report that our beloved computer has died....
Roughly two months ago he started showing signs of poor health.
Upon rebooting and startup words like "hard drive failure is imminent please back up your files immediately" kept appearing.

We had hoped he would last another year, but apparently imminent means this past Sunday 9/9 (Two weeks after the warranty expired). For now, he is still on "life support" because he won't turn off. We will be pulling the plug soon. Sadly, this particular computer's life only lasted a little over a year. His two predecessors also lasted less than 18 months. Do yourselves a favor, don't shop in the "disposable" computer isle at BestBuy. They really should give these cheap computers expiration or "sell by" dates like with dairy products.

We managed to back up (crosses fingers) a majority of our pictures but the other documents may be long gone.

His replacement has already been chosen, but will not be purchased until Jack starts with the firm (read Annie wants an Apple and Jack promised her long before this computer died that she will get one). Luckily we still have Jack's laptop to work from.

I am writing from my work computer so there may not be as many pictures from now until we get our new computer.

Gabi's first camping trip.

This weekend we decided to be active members of our ward and go on the ward campout in Payson. We had a hard time getting out there, with both of us having to work and Gabi being extra fussy (having a melt-down), but we made it. We got there a little after 9pm. Big thanks to Chris and Lolly for letting us borrow their lantern! Our new bishop and another member of the bishopric helped us set up our tent.

There wasn't much time to talk that evening, but we bundled up Gabi sat around the fire for an hour or so before we went to bed. She slept untill about 6:30AM and then we had breakfast around 7ish. We left for home around 9:45. We had not been camping in quite some time so it was fun to be out in nature again....even if you could hear the traffic from the highway. :)

Jack's Note: On the way home we stopped at the Circle K in Payson for some water and a caffeinated diet beverage. As I waited for the foam to subside on my little vice I overheard one of the local (delete "rednecks" and add "characters") calling to the three hellions raiding the candy isle. Fittingly enough, their names were Winchester, Remington, and Deringer (I don't know why he didn't go with Ruger for the third kid...maybe he already has a dog by that name?). You all know that I love guns...but even I could never go that far. I think Annie should keep that in mind the next time I put forth my suggestions for baby names.

Mom, Dad, what is camping? Will...will there be bears?!?!

Our 3 man (or 1 man, 1 woman, and 1 baby) tent.

Baby and Dad sleeping

Gabi loves to stretch in the morning and after her naps.

She always wakes up with a smile!

She loves her fist!

Gabi Update....the shots

We took Gabi in to see the dermatologist again on Wednesday (9/6). The hemangioma on her face was growing again...way too fast. After much prayer and reflection we decided it was time to try the steroid injection. She bled quite a bit and cried a lot, but it all went okay. These injections should help stop the growth. The hemangioma will still have to go away on its own. She'll go back in two weeks for a follow up visit and possibly another set of injections. Cross your fingers.

The Move...

This is Jack...I guess I am allowed to chime in on here too sometimes. We moved two weeks ago...back to Arizona from BFE. The area around the ASU East Campus was nice, but it was just too far away from Phoenix....I couldn't handle a commute that long. My buddy Dennis had 3 bedroom townhouse in Tempe which he was looking to rent out...so that's where we ended up. We plan to be here for at least a year (until I finish the clerkship) at which point we'll take a serious look at the housing market and make a decision about whether to buy (according to a study in the NYTimes, the Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale area is the second most likely place in the country to lose value over the next two years....64% chance of double digit loses....seems pretty arbitrary considering the market is nearly impossible to predict....but it could be good for us I guess).

The move went off without a hitch (except for the rain). We're so grateful to have so many friends that were willing to help out. We started at 6am and just about everybody I asked to come showed up! We had 11 adults and 3 children giving a hand...almost too much help! It got a little crowded and it wasn't uncommon to have to wait in line to load something in the truck. We had the truck loaded by about 7:30 and unloaded at the new place by 9:30.

Gabi is tired after the move!

Shots of people who helped us move. Look at all the muddy tracks!

More Gabi updates...

Since the last appointment there has been a lot going on...The cream did not stop Gabi's hemangiomas from growing. She now actually has one on her butt (near her girly parts), but it is only as large as a pin-prick...and not at all raised. The doctor said that if it begins to grow at all he will laser it off so it won't become a problem (the pin-prick one...not the one on her face). We unfortunately found out that if we had been able to see Dr. Halmi at the very beginning of all this he could have lasered off Gabi's facial hemangioma and we wouldn't have to be dealing with any of this right now!!!! I was SO furious! But, there is nothing that can be done about that now...

Since the cream didn't stop the growth, the next step is steroid shots. We are reluctant to do that because of the potential that it might leave a scar on her face. :( We asked our family to pray and fast for Gabi this past Sunday 9/02/07 and we are grateful for all who participated! Over this Labor Day weekend Gabi's hemangioma changed every 24 hours (and not in a good way)! That worried us so we made an appointment for 9/5/07 at 11AM so that the Dr. can look at the recent development. Jack and I are SO stressed out about this. However, we saw a show over the weekend about a little girl who couldn't breath on her own, hold her head up, etc...so things could definitely be worse. We are grateful for our little Gabi and glad she is such a happy little baby --in spite of her little issues.

During all this I have gone back to work. I have been back since 8/13. I really like it and it is only part-time...so that is nice. I would love to continue working until Jack starts with the firm, but we will see how it goes on people to watch little Gabi. :)

Hemangiomas...

Since our last post Jack pointed out to me that Gabi's facial hemangioma looked and felt like it was growing under the skin too. I called up the dermatologist right away to see if we could get in to see him ASAP. He was able to get us in three days later...on 8/10.

Dr. Halmi looked at it and agreed with what we had discovered. Gabi now has a mixed hemangioma (superficial and deep). That means it is growing above and BELOW the skin. The one below is a LOT larger than the one above. He wrote a prescription for a cream called Aldara 5%. It was originally formulated for use in genital warts (eww...) It has also found success in treating cancerous lesions and stopping the growth of hemangiomas. We are using a VERY small amount on Gabi once a day for about two weeks and then we will see the Dr. again. If the medication really starts to irritate the skin then we are supposed to stop. (We we're not supposed to let the area scab.) We are not looking for this to make the hemangioma go away, just to make it stop growing so it will go away on its own. Wish us luck.
